Top 20 Mixtapes

As hip-hop and the Internet march merrily through the future hand in hand, the importance of the mixtape only grows. Like last year–and a handful before that–some of the year’s most notable music has been packaged in a free .zip file, not to mention been able to compete with that which is sold for retail. As its original definition of a collection of unmastered freestyles becomes archaic, the mixtape game has served as an essential platform for both fresh faces and established MCs alike to raise and reward their fanbase–and, boy, were we treated this year. With much scrutiny and even more head scratching, here we present to you our top 20 mixtapes of 2012…

    Greg Grease – “Forward”

If you’ve managed to get this far during the week, you probably deserve a break. And what good timing to introduce Greg Grease‘s latest video for “Forward”, a stripped down, less-is-more banger that doesn’t need to be overdramatic to get it’s point across. Directed by Adam Dunn as a part of his #LABB (Lights and a Backdrop) series, the visuals are as minimalistic as it gets, allowing the Grease, his DJ and his turntable to play centre stage. Check it out and be sure to pick up Greg Grease’s Black King Cole EP if you don’t already own it.
