The main reason you will like this album is its lack of need to be put into a thematic box to be relatable. It’s not strictly stoner Hip-Hop or emo Hip-Hop. The lyrics combined with the beats make for a project that stands apart from anything that’s been released in recent memory. Sonically, Kid Cudi has created a blend of The Doors and Kanye’s full orchestra arrangements, with some crushed barbiturates sprinkled on top. Add to that the fact that Kid Cudi portrays himself as a socially awkward pariah in the industry and boom, you have the perfect fodder for kids around the world who feel like no one else will be their friend but Scott Mescudi. This remix may come as a surprise to some, but it’s been a long time coming. Since “Purple Swag” and “Peso” captured eyes and ears in mid-2011, A$AP Rocky has emerged as one of hip-hop’s most polarizing stars. Meanwhile, across the pond, Jessie Ware has come into her own as the UK’s next big thing, evident by the global critical and commercial success of her 2012 debut album, Devotion.

It’s on the remix of Ms. Ware’s LP single, “Wildest Moments,” that the paths of these two promising and pioneering new talents intertwine — and we’re pretty certain that if this was the original, it would have been a prize on many an end-of-year list in 2012.

By all accounts, A$AP Rocky, founding member of hip hop collective A$AP MOB, is doing pretty well. Following the grand success of his LiveLoveA$AP mixtape in 2011, Rocky dropped his first full length album, LONG.LIVE.A$AP, January 15, 2013, to much anticipation. All in all, A$AP’s debut should guarantee the promising emcee a continued path along his star trajectory. Hit the jump to read the review for LONG.LOVE.A$AP in its entirety – Spotify album stream included.

Greg Grease – “Forward”

If you’ve managed to get this far during the week, you probably deserve a break. And what good timing to introduce Greg Grease‘s latest video for “Forward”, a stripped down, less-is-more banger that doesn’t need to be overdramatic to get it’s point across. Directed by Adam Dunn as a part of his #LABB (Lights and a Backdrop) series, the visuals are as minimalistic as it gets, allowing the Grease, his DJ and his turntable to play centre stage. Check it out and be sure to pick up Greg Grease’s Black King Cole EP if you don’t already own it.
