If there’s one thing we’ve realized in 2012, it’s that the best music isn’t always sold in stores. With much scrutiny and even more head scratching, here we present to you our top 20 mixtapes of 2012.

Philly up-and-comer Asaad has been pretty quiet these past few months–probably more so because he was so damn busy at the start of the year!–but he’s back out of hibernation today with a brand new EP, Troy.

Love it, hate it, or indifferent to the “Boss Status” cover, it did seem to cause quite a stir, resulting in more blog coverage than I’ve ever seen for ’em. So why not take advantage on the new found fame/infamy and follow it up with something else right away…right? That something else is a mini-documentary that shows Asaad in studio, label meetings, interviews, and more rapper stuff.

Ummmm…..I usually say something about the record, but with the controversial cover art, I’ll let Asaad do the explaining. Hit the jump for the quasi NSFW imagery and clarification.

Philadelphia emcee Asaad first appeared on my radar late last year with a Bink! produced track “Black Kids Dream”. After one listen, I was immediately taken back by the way Asaad owned a beat that would over power most emcees. Since then, Asaad has been releasing music at a rapid rate, with two mixtapes and countless singles that have proven that he’s one of Hip-Hop’s most promising voices. In the midst of getting ready for SXSW and working in the studio, Asaad was nice enough to jump on the phone and let me pick his brain. Hit the jump to read His ® Story, in its entirety.

Greg Grease – “Forward”

If you’ve managed to get this far during the week, you probably deserve a break. And what good timing to introduce Greg Grease‘s latest video for “Forward”, a stripped down, less-is-more banger that doesn’t need to be overdramatic to get it’s point across. Directed by Adam Dunn as a part of his #LABB (Lights and a Backdrop) series, the visuals are as minimalistic as it gets, allowing the Grease, his DJ and his turntable to play centre stage. Check it out and be sure to pick up Greg Grease’s Black King Cole EP if you don’t already own it.
