buddy

Despite calling Pharrell his mentor, Buddy has only released five singles — dope singles, at that — in the space of 15 months, so we’re not quite sure where the kid’s career is heading. Nevertheless, we know the Compton newcomer has talent, and that’s more than evident on this hazy new track, “Aw Nah,” featuring Asher Roth. The cut isn’t off Buddy’s eagerly awaited Idle Time debut, but instead ILLROOTS’ new ILLROOTS Radio: Volume Three mix.

First off, this has probably been the most eventful week of the year (if you’re a celebrity, anyway). Within the space of seven days, we’ve celebrated the 55th Annual Grammy Awards, mourned the passing of Bronx rapper Tim Dog, grit our teeth through the cheesy annual routine known as Valentine’s Day and are currently capping off the week by watching the best basketball players in the globe do their stuff on the court for the NBA All-Star Weekend.

Main stream Hip-Hop media aside, we’ve also put our hardhats on and done some digging round these here Internets to bring you the five best audio and visual gems which you may have missed. This week we’re thankful for Maffew Ragazino, Mike Posner, Ill Bill, Murs and Fashawn, and The Black Opera. As per usual, hit the jump and get to diggin’..

Before he heads out on tour in Europe (and because it’s Ash Wednesday!), Asher Roth blesses us with this laid-back boom bap number, “Dude,” featuring Curren$y.

We’re really not sure what the hell is going on in Asher Roth‘s camp right now. Shit, we doubt they do, either. The scheduled release date (January 22) for his long, long-awaited sophomore album has come and gone with little explanation, his last single (“Party Girl” featuring Meek Mill) came over 10 months ago–and failed to buzz–and as a poor form of compensation, the P.A. rapper releases quick-fire freestyle recordings like this. We’re not mad at Roth for rapping over Pete Rock‘s “Pete’s Jazz,” we’re just mad that this is all he’s bringing to our ears right now.

Quick Armchair A&R: Asher, take the indie route already!

Greg Grease – “Forward”

If you’ve managed to get this far during the week, you probably deserve a break. And what good timing to introduce Greg Grease‘s latest video for “Forward”, a stripped down, less-is-more banger that doesn’t need to be overdramatic to get it’s point across. Directed by Adam Dunn as a part of his #LABB (Lights and a Backdrop) series, the visuals are as minimalistic as it gets, allowing the Grease, his DJ and his turntable to play centre stage. Check it out and be sure to pick up Greg Grease’s Black King Cole EP if you don’t already own it.
