After just one listen to Legends Never Die, you get a very accurate portrait of R.A.’s current position in life in a few ways. Of course you can just admire the album artwork in awe and fill in the blanks, if any are left. But for the full experience of a story about a man who’s struggled, won, and fights to preserve the art of Hip-Hop, you’re going to need to allot about 52 minutes with some Conan the Barbarian strength speakers. That said, go ahead and hit the jump to read our review for Legends Never Die in its entirety – SoundCloud album stream inclued.

Weighing in at 17 hefty tracks, the album is best summarized as “The hardcore Hip-Hop with heart, like nitroglycerin/ The type of rap you feel in your cardiac/ The grimy, illmatical boom bap, mathematical goon rap” (“Truth”). It’s a mix of barbed wire for breakfast, tough guy lyricism, everyday wisdom, and personal meditations-all told through the meticulously calculated flows over timeless production and dynamic cuts. So without further adieu, we present you with The Grimy Awardshit the jump for the full review and Spotify album stream.

Fresh off producing Big Noyd, Large Professor and Kool G Rap‘s epic “Naturally Born” collaboration — the seventh single off Coalmine Records’ very own Unearthed compilation album — veteran beatsmith Ayatollah is back with another gem. “Nothing But the Funk” doesn’t feature legendary MCs — it’s only an instrumental — but with a funky bassline, triumphant drums and vintage soul sample like these, who needs lyrics?! This is an appetizer for Ayatollah’s upcoming Avant Garde, releasing March 5 via Elementality Productions. It’s safe to say we’re looking forward to the main course already.

Is Queens in the building?! It certainly is on Big Noyd, Large Professor and Kool G Rap‘s surprise new collaboration, “Naturally Born.” Needless to say, the Ayatollah-produced cut sounds right out of the Golden Age, with the three vets waxing poetic over a vintage boom bap beat, complete with cuts by DJ Dutchmaster. This is the seventh single from our fam Coalmine Records’ Unearthed compilation album, which will drop in the second quarter of the year.

Greg Grease – “Forward”

If you’ve managed to get this far during the week, you probably deserve a break. And what good timing to introduce Greg Grease‘s latest video for “Forward”, a stripped down, less-is-more banger that doesn’t need to be overdramatic to get it’s point across. Directed by Adam Dunn as a part of his #LABB (Lights and a Backdrop) series, the visuals are as minimalistic as it gets, allowing the Grease, his DJ and his turntable to play centre stage. Check it out and be sure to pick up Greg Grease’s Black King Cole EP if you don’t already own it.
