Reviews Reviews

Having marinated on Joey Bada$$’s Summer Knights mixtape for nearly eleven days, since it was birthed into cyberspace on July 1st, I’m pleased to present you with my review for the Pro Era frontman’s follow-up to the internet classic 1999.

We’ve already heard “Sumo” from Super Helpful, the makeshift trio of Chuck Strangers, Lee Bannon and Kwame3000, but now here’s another helping in the shape of “Lawns,” featuring Chuck’s Pro Era pals Joey Bada$$, Kirk Knight and CJ Fly. You may recognize it as the closer on Pro Era’s recent PEEP: The aPROcalypse mixtape, but it’s also arguably the standout cut on Super Helpful’s The Help EP, which you can stream in full here.

A surprising, but very welcome, trio of hip-hop talent has merged. Super Helpful is comprised of Sacramento beatmaker Lee Bannon, Pro Era producer/MC Chuck Strangers and rapper Kwame, who formally introduce themselves with this initial–and rather incredible–track, “Sumo.” MF DOOM semblance, obscure samples and muffled melancholy; this is nothing short of what we’d expect from the three. Let’s hope this is the first helping of Super Helpful.

Playing to hundreds, possibly thousands, of people almost every night can have it perks (of course, I can only imagine), but Joey Bada$$ is glad to be back home off tour; so much so, that the 17-year-old Brooklyn phenom has decided to commemorate the occasion with this new track, aptly-titled “Home,” with his Pro Era beatmaker Chuck Strangers. The combination makes for a familiarly nostalgic affair, and one that should warrant burn in the tapedeck. Stream a snippet of “Home” below, and look for the joint to appear on Chuck’s forthcoming mixtape, FREEBASS.

Greg Grease – “Forward”

If you’ve managed to get this far during the week, you probably deserve a break. And what good timing to introduce Greg Grease‘s latest video for “Forward”, a stripped down, less-is-more banger that doesn’t need to be overdramatic to get it’s point across. Directed by Adam Dunn as a part of his #LABB (Lights and a Backdrop) series, the visuals are as minimalistic as it gets, allowing the Grease, his DJ and his turntable to play centre stage. Check it out and be sure to pick up Greg Grease’s Black King Cole EP if you don’t already own it.
