I gotta admit, I’ve never been compelled to sit down and listen to Emilio Rojas, but this lineup definitely grabbed my attention. For “Lean On Em,” the first single from his upcoming No Shame No Regrets project, the Rochester, New York MC calls on IamSu!, Styles P and Troy Ave to bolster a cold !llmind beat. My hat’s off, Señor Rojas.

Audible Doctor flexes his remixing muscles for once again for KevinNottingham’s The Morning After: 2012 Remixed and Revisited project. The BBAS beatsmith crafts a brassy, boom bap backdrop for four particularly gifted MCs, Rediculus, Sha Stimuli, Sadat X and Emilio Rojas, to kick the realness. For more of the same, grab the full LP over on Bandcamp.

M-Phazes x Emilio Rojas x Rich Rivera = A very, very good combination on “Holdin’ It Down”. This loosie is the bonus track off the untagged version of Phazed Out, which is now available in the singular formation. Some good ol’ soulful boombap that seems to have found a warm, cushy spot in that gray area sliver between 89 Tech 9 and Hot 97. Consider this the backpacker’s equivalent to Tony Stark’s “Back Like That”.

Greg Grease – “Forward”

If you’ve managed to get this far during the week, you probably deserve a break. And what good timing to introduce Greg Grease‘s latest video for “Forward”, a stripped down, less-is-more banger that doesn’t need to be overdramatic to get it’s point across. Directed by Adam Dunn as a part of his #LABB (Lights and a Backdrop) series, the visuals are as minimalistic as it gets, allowing the Grease, his DJ and his turntable to play centre stage. Check it out and be sure to pick up Greg Grease’s Black King Cole EP if you don’t already own it.
