mac miller

Whether you like him or not, you have to respect Mac Miller‘s open approach to trying something new — especially as a mainstream rapper with a No. 1 album under his belt. Mac definitely goes leftfield on “S.D.S.,” the glitchy, Flying Lotus-produced first single from his upcoming album, Watching Movies with the Sound Off. Don’t mess with the volume on this one, though.

kamidechukwu

One of our favorite new artists outta Chicago (scratch that, outta anywhere) Kami de Chukwu brings us some new goodness today by finally gifting “Anna Nicole Smith.” The Save Money MC laces Flying Lotus‘ mousy “Putty Boy Strut” like it was crafted for himself, transitioning between hearty verses and a melodious hook with ease. Kami’s sophomore mixtape, Smoke — the follow up to last year’s Light — is coming this Spring.

In case you missed it, read our interview with Kami de Chukwu here, where he talks Smoke, Save Money, Chief Keef and Chicago hip-hop.

HeroesAndSuperVillains_500

December happened this weekend, you know. And in the off-chance that the familiar seasonal tunes, cringeworthy commercials and this shitting cold weather haven’t zapped your Christmas spirit, you should be feeling pretty generous right now.

Jeremiah Jae

Fresh off the release of his debut album, Raw Money Raps, yesterday (July 24th), Brainfeeder-signed, Chicago-bred emcee Jeremiah Jae serves up a sample of the record with “Cat Fight”. Linking up with revered beatsmith Flying Lotus (who directed his “Money” music video just last month), Jae finds himself at the helm of a groovy, soul-sampling number, and coasts the wave with a lackadaisical flow that screams (or should I say nonchalantly announces) “too cool for school” – excuse the cliché. You can stream the new track below and pick up your copy of Raw Money Raps here on iTunes.

Earl Sweatshirt

Both aficionados of Adult Swim, revered electronic producer Flying Lotus and Odd Future’s highly-regarded lyricist Earl Sweatshirt come together for their first collaboration, “Between Friends”. The title isn’t far wrong, as FlyLo’s gentle boom bap sound bed sets ups Earl’s dexterous delivery for its potentially perfect counterpart (read: potential). Instead of going down the traditional route, however, the teen spitter engages in lyrical dialogue with an unidentified guest called Captain Murphy. The final product is a little underwhelming, but Juno Leed’s sublime instrumental warrants time in your ears. Stream the track below and download it for free via AdultSwim.com.

Curren$y – “Mary”

Directed by: CJ Wallis

He may be a self-confessed stoner, but Curren$y is far from lazy. When he’s not in the studio pumping out umpteen projects a year, Spitta is busy on the road. In the new alternative video to “Mary,” off his New Jet City mixtape, the Jet Life chief compiles live footage from three of his most recent shows in just under three minutes.

  1. Havoc (feat. Styles P & Raekwon) – “Favorite Rap Stars”
  2. Tree (feat. Danny Brown) – “No Faces”
  3. Mac Miller – “Watching Movies”
  4. Casey Veggies – “Money Don’t Buy Time” (prod. by Lee Bannon)
  5. The-Dream (feat. Jay-Z) – “High Art”
  6. Chance The Rapper & Nosaj Thing – “Paranoia”
  7. Mobb Deep – “Life We Chose” (Remix)
  8. Jon Connor (feat. Royce Da 5’9″) – “Michigan $h*t”
  9. Hannibal Stax & Marco Polo (feat. Torae) – “Warrior Drumz”
  10. Erick Arc Elliott – “50″
