This week was definitely a funny one; and it was yet more proof that 2013 might just be the craziest year in hip-hop so far.

Plus: the week’s best slept-on releases from Ro Ransom, Derek Wise, Noah Jones and Jay Rock, Papoose and DJ Premier, and Rilgood.

Uh oh. While Rocko‘s promised remixes have dried up, the Black Hippy boys give his monster “U.O.E.N.O.” single a brand new flavor. Jay Rock went the fuck in.

After supporting Kendrick Lamar on stage during his Saturday Night Live performance over the weekend, it’s safe to say Terrace Martin is riding a high right now. That’s lucky for us, as the West Coast crooner/producer gifts us this free track, “Why.” It won’t land on his long-awaited 3ChordFold release due to sample clearance issues, but it does feature Jay Rock and Wendi Vaughn, and one helluva smooth beat.

Kendrick Lamar’s debut album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, has been released to almost instant acclaim today, but while the initial 12 tracks have been welcomed with open arms (and ears), perhaps a gripe–the only gripe–is the lack of TDE presence. Allow Target to right that wrong, as they offer two all-Black Hippy bonus cuts on their CD copy–one of these seeing Jay Rock, Ab-Soul and ScHoolboy Q hit the liquor with Kendrick for the official remix of his radio single, “Swimming Pools (Drank).” You can stream the track below and pick up a copy of good kid, m.A.A.d city on iTunes if your collection is (disappointingly) lacking.

kendrick lamar

Although it won’t feature on his massively awaited debut album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, Kendrick Lamar finally follows up on (O)verly (D)edicated‘s “The Heart Pt. 2” with installment numero tres. The instrumental is as charmingly harmonic as its predecessor (which hopefully you know borrows The Roots’ “A Piece of Light”), but finds Kendrick trading dexterous rhymes with his fellow Top Dawgs Ab-Soul and Jay Rock. You gotta love when things come full circle like this.

Greg Grease – “Forward”

If you’ve managed to get this far during the week, you probably deserve a break. And what good timing to introduce Greg Grease‘s latest video for “Forward”, a stripped down, less-is-more banger that doesn’t need to be overdramatic to get it’s point across. Directed by Adam Dunn as a part of his #LABB (Lights and a Backdrop) series, the visuals are as minimalistic as it gets, allowing the Grease, his DJ and his turntable to play centre stage. Check it out and be sure to pick up Greg Grease’s Black King Cole EP if you don’t already own it.
