Chicago has a crazy varied scene of Hip-Hop. One collective that has been steady putting out tracks that you can nod to and are rewind-worthy is the SaveMoney crew.

One of our favorite new artists outta Chicago (scratch that, outta anywhere) Kami de Chukwu brings us some new goodness today by finally gifting “Anna Nicole Smith.” The Save Money MC laces Flying Lotus‘ mousy “Putty Boy Strut” like it was crafted for himself, transitioning between hearty verses and a melodious hook with ease. Kami’s sophomore mixtape, Smoke — the follow up to last year’s Light — is coming this Spring.

In case you missed it, read our interview with Kami de Chukwu here, where he talks Smoke, Save Money, Chief Keef and Chicago hip-hop.

With the mightily impressive Light mixtape under his belt, and a follow-up project readying for release this year, we caught up with Save Money MC Kami de Chukwu to discuss his plans for the near future, pick his brain about Chief Keef and Chicago rap, and attempt to figure out just how the hell he got so good, so young.

I feel like there was a little gap in between Kanye West and now, basically. There wasn’t a strong influx of people creating good music out of Chicago. I feel there was a lot of people honing their skills and understanding what they were trying to do. And when one person stepped to the forefront, it just encouraged a whole bunch of other people to try it.

Aside from the continued debate in the rap writing world about “cultural tourism” (coined by Rap Radar’s own B.Dot), this week was nostalgic, to say the least. Hit the jump to check out this week’s Heroes & Super Villains – shouts to Fearce Vill, SpaceGhostPurrp, Chase N. Cashe, Kami de Chukwu and Truck North.

I’ve only recently got hip to Kami de Chukwu, but everything I’ve heard from the Chicago kid has been golden. His latest offering, “Stop Crying,” is no different; the blend of dexterous rhymes and a hearty, ever-changing pitch (akin to ScHoolboy Q on “THere He Go”) earn this plenty of burn in the tapedeck (or iTunes, if I’m being straight with you). And don’t get me started on that hazy jazz loop.
If you’re liking this track, I definitely recommend you lending an ear to Kami’s recent full-length release, Light.

Greg Grease – “Forward”

If you’ve managed to get this far during the week, you probably deserve a break. And what good timing to introduce Greg Grease‘s latest video for “Forward”, a stripped down, less-is-more banger that doesn’t need to be overdramatic to get it’s point across. Directed by Adam Dunn as a part of his #LABB (Lights and a Backdrop) series, the visuals are as minimalistic as it gets, allowing the Grease, his DJ and his turntable to play centre stage. Check it out and be sure to pick up Greg Grease’s Black King Cole EP if you don’t already own it.
