Kaze

In anticipation of his new Black Kennedy mixtape dropping this Thursday, North Carolina MC KAZE (who you may remember from his 2005 full-length collaboration with 9th Wonder, Spirit of ’94 Version 9.0) releases this new track, “Searching.” Amanda Barrino compliments his pensive, powerful lyrical subject with a soothing guest chorus, while M-Phazes supplies the soft, soul-sampling soundtrack. Black Kennedy releases February 21 via DJ Booth.

Given the turkeys we all feasted upon this past week, it’s only right that this week’s post rant shows a little gratitude to the things us hip-hop heads often overlook. We’re thankful for Danny Brown’s stories (this one is just the best); the decline of “YOLO” (thank God); SoundCloud, Audio Mack and other good quality music sharing sites which keeps this engine we call music running; independent talents-turned-mega music superstars like Kendrick Lamar and Frank Ocean; and the frequency of old school legends teaming up with some of the new school’s finest. Just take our first pick of this week’s best-releases-you-might-have-missed after the jump. Shouts to Rah Digga, The Game, Fabolous, Captain Murphy, Jabee and more.

AWAR

After previously featuring the audio a few week’s back, AWAR unveils the visuals for the M-Phazes produced “Dreamin’,” taken from The Law of Nature LP, which is now available. Shot in the Big Apple, the Dan Meyers directed video wavers back and forth for the life that the NYC rhymesayer lives, and the life he dreams of. From the gritty and grimy to the glitz and glamour, “Dreamin’” represents the plight of many of us that ride the divide between reality and fantasy – welcome to the music industry…hit the jump.

AWAR

There’s no denying that M-Phazes has taken a backseat to his signature boom-bap as of late, as the Aussie composer has shifted focus to a more discerning stadium sound that’s demonstrated here with AWAR’s latest leak “Dreamin’.” I was psyched to see M-Phazes appear in the producer credits when I saw the tracklist start making it’s way onto the web, prior to the album’s release, and was curious how phazes production would mesh with the other top shelf producers featured on the LP, such as The Alchemsit, Jake One and Nottz. Fortunately, the combination is a good one that showcases a completely different side of AWAR’s artistic range that’s not particularly conveyed elsewhere on the LP. Conceptually, the track which finds the NY emcee fantasizing about seeing all the fruits of his labor finally come to fruition isn’t entirely original, but hey, we’re all entitled to our champagne wishes and caviar dreams. The Laws Of Nature is now available on both iTunes and Amazon.

AWAR - The Laws of Nature (Cover)

The last few leaks from The Laws Of Nature have been well-received and they somewhat established a high bar for AWAR to live up to. Featuring production from Jake One, M-Phazes, Nottz, and verses from Murs, Stat Quo, Joe Budden and others, AWAR’s project bangs with its production and gritty, Hip-Hop presentation. Hit the jump to read the review in its entirety…Spotify album stream included.

Greg Grease – “Forward”

If you’ve managed to get this far during the week, you probably deserve a break. And what good timing to introduce Greg Grease‘s latest video for “Forward”, a stripped down, less-is-more banger that doesn’t need to be overdramatic to get it’s point across. Directed by Adam Dunn as a part of his #LABB (Lights and a Backdrop) series, the visuals are as minimalistic as it gets, allowing the Grease, his DJ and his turntable to play centre stage. Check it out and be sure to pick up Greg Grease’s Black King Cole EP if you don’t already own it.
