Having marinated on Joey Bada$$’s Summer Knights mixtape for nearly eleven days, since it was birthed into cyberspace on July 1st, I’m pleased to present you with my review for the Pro Era frontman’s follow-up to the internet classic 1999.

After borrowing a handful of beats on his breakout release, 1999, Joey Bada$$ properly collaborates with an artist he’s cited as one his idols, MF DOOM. Metal Fingerz provides the icy boom bap beat for his latest single, “Amethyst Rockstar,” featuring fellow Pro Era MC Kirk Knight. Joey’s Summer Knights project drops online for free July 1.

If you’re like us at Takin’ Mines, you can’t get enough DOOM. And apparently, Grip Grand is like us. Take a listen to “Bain de Soleil” below and the rest of the project after the jump.

I know there were a few of us who were hoping that when MA_DOOM was announced, it would have Masta Ace and Doom collaborating on all original beats. Although there was a small amount of disappointment when I realized Ace had chosen to rhyme over instrumentals from Doom’s Special Herbs, it still doesn’t change the fact that this is a concept album that does well for itself by following through with it until the end. Hit the jump to read the review in it’s entirety and check out the full album stream, courtesy of Spotify.

Greg Grease – “Forward”

If you’ve managed to get this far during the week, you probably deserve a break. And what good timing to introduce Greg Grease‘s latest video for “Forward”, a stripped down, less-is-more banger that doesn’t need to be overdramatic to get it’s point across. Directed by Adam Dunn as a part of his #LABB (Lights and a Backdrop) series, the visuals are as minimalistic as it gets, allowing the Grease, his DJ and his turntable to play centre stage. Check it out and be sure to pick up Greg Grease’s Black King Cole EP if you don’t already own it.
