phony ppl

2012’s pretty much a wrap, but Phony Ppl’s “Statues” video could have easily landed on some end of year lists.

kids these days

They’re a little late with this gift, but you already know what’s to blame. Two of hip-hop’s most promising, not to mention eclectically talented, young bands, Kids These Days of Chicago and Brooklyn’s Phony Ppl, join in celebration of Chronic and Christmas with this collaborative jam, “Mary Christmas.” Both collectives have a broad sound palette, but their jazzy brands of hip-hop sound even sweeter when blended into one. Smoke some trees to this one.

Phony Ppl are a new group out of Brooklyn that can claim people such as Q-Tip, Peanut Butter Wolf, Plain Pat and Giles Peterson as fans.  Consisting of emcees, a live band and a songwriting/production team, they manage the difficult task of combining all their individual elements into a focused sound, which is something I find lacking in most live hip-hop/multi-genre bands. The collective just released their debut  album, PhonyLand  a few weeks back and it’s something that’s worth taking the time to check out.  Stream “Good” below and hit the jump to stream/buy the whole project, courtesy of Bandcamp.

Greg Grease – “Forward”

If you’ve managed to get this far during the week, you probably deserve a break. And what good timing to introduce Greg Grease‘s latest video for “Forward”, a stripped down, less-is-more banger that doesn’t need to be overdramatic to get it’s point across. Directed by Adam Dunn as a part of his #LABB (Lights and a Backdrop) series, the visuals are as minimalistic as it gets, allowing the Grease, his DJ and his turntable to play centre stage. Check it out and be sure to pick up Greg Grease’s Black King Cole EP if you don’t already own it.
