This week was definitely a funny one; and it was yet more proof that 2013 might just be the craziest year in hip-hop so far.

Plus: the week’s best slept-on releases from Ro Ransom, Derek Wise, Noah Jones and Jay Rock, Papoose and DJ Premier, and Rilgood.

Rilgood continues his Great Expectations mixtape campaign with the visuals for the track “GUN,” directed by PALMirie Films. Dedicated toward Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17-year old African American student who was shot and killed by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman, “GUN” showcases Rilgood’s hard-line ‘call to arms,’ for his community to fight for liberation against police brutality. Hit the jump and check it out.

After several leaks, Brooklynite spitter Rilgood lets the leash off his sophomore mixtape, Great Expectations. At sixteen tracks with production handled primarily via Woodro Skillson and RC Bankwell, Rilgood can now add his name to the growing roster of NY artists that are shape shifting the Empire State’s creative renaissance. Having demonstrated his penchant for catchy club hits with “Automatic”, traditional lyrical joints like “Who Should I Be?” and even modern stylistic swag rap such on “We Rollin 2”, NYC rep Rilgood continues to unveil the many faces of his musical diversity, this time offering up “Dangerous”. As the title suggest, this latest freebie documents the shady nature of his home city – not over ’90s-rooted boom bap rattle, instead at the forefront of a melodic indie rock-esque backdrop. Allow Ril to open your mind below. His next mixtape Great Expectations arrives on July 17th.

Greg Grease – “Forward”

If you’ve managed to get this far during the week, you probably deserve a break. And what good timing to introduce Greg Grease‘s latest video for “Forward”, a stripped down, less-is-more banger that doesn’t need to be overdramatic to get it’s point across. Directed by Adam Dunn as a part of his #LABB (Lights and a Backdrop) series, the visuals are as minimalistic as it gets, allowing the Grease, his DJ and his turntable to play centre stage. Check it out and be sure to pick up Greg Grease’s Black King Cole EP if you don’t already own it.
