HeroesAndSuperVillains_500

This week’s Heroes & Super Villains installment is not Holiday-themed (like you really need another spoonful of gross, insincere commercialism shoved down your throat, right?) There are no songs dedicated to Saint Nick, lyrics telling of romantic, snowy mornings or catchy, seasonal jingles, because, let’s face it, Christmas is so not hip-hop. But while you are enjoying the blessings of the Holiday season, here’s five releases from this week that any grumpy hip-hop head can bump in their headphones (because I know you’re not humming to any radio tunes). Merry Christmas, y’all – shouts to Asher Roth, The Yancey Boys, Erick Arc Elliott, Talib Kweli and Maffew Ragazino for the dopeness.

TalibKweli

Kweli heads may recognize the MC’s new joint from his recent Attack The Block mixtape, but it appears he has reissued “Outstanding” in its full version, complete with a guest verse and hook from Rap/R&B hybrid Ryan Leslie. This makes for a smooth blend over Boi-1da’s knocking production. It doesn’t look like this refix will be used for Talib’s upcoming Prisoner of Conscious album, given he revealed the tracklist a few weeks ago, unless it gets tacked on as a bonus track. Speculation aside, enjoy “Outstanding” 2.0 below.

Ryan Leslie

We posted recently the Nas single that has most of us excited a few days ago, and it took all of two days for a big name artist to remix it. Ryan Leslie steps to the plate, offering a different perspective on the term “Accident Murderers” by telling a tale of a snitch. As legit as the verse is, it pales in comparison to the high-energy that Nas and Rick Ross had, but it’s still a solid verse nonetheless. Check the song and the extra verse below, and let us know what you think.

Greg Grease – “Forward”

If you’ve managed to get this far during the week, you probably deserve a break. And what good timing to introduce Greg Grease‘s latest video for “Forward”, a stripped down, less-is-more banger that doesn’t need to be overdramatic to get it’s point across. Directed by Adam Dunn as a part of his #LABB (Lights and a Backdrop) series, the visuals are as minimalistic as it gets, allowing the Grease, his DJ and his turntable to play centre stage. Check it out and be sure to pick up Greg Grease’s Black King Cole EP if you don’t already own it.
