There’s no question that between Hova’s recent trip to Cuba and his plans to divest his ownership stake in the Brooklyn Nets to become a sports agent, that his name has been making headlines internationally. Well Iceberg Slim might not reply back to your diss record, but try and question his motives and he’ll be quick to dump a lyrical clip in ya’. How quick.. so quick that he and his long time collaborators Timbaland and Swizz Beatz hit the lab just last night to pen an “Open Letter,” and before most of us could reach for the snooze bar this morning, the song’s already gone viral.. y’all gonna learn today.

Y’all must wanna start a revolution, ya’ know whenever I’m threatened I start shootin’/ Catch a body, head to Houston, I’m in Cuba, I love Cubans/ This communist talk is so confusing, when it’s from China the very mic that I’m usin’…

We here at Takin’ Mines have noticed a crazy trend lately in the reuse of classic samples, so much to the point that its motivated us to launch this new column that we’ll start posting every Friday, appropriately titled Friday Flips (don’t sue me Mr. Silverman). The concept here is to pick one new single every week that’s reused a recognizable sample and see how it holds up to other tracks that flipped the same sample.. easy right? When it’s all said and done, we’ll let you get the last word by voting on your favorite version.

So for our inaugural post, we’re gonna see how Scoop DeVille‘s flip of David McCallum‘s 1967 classic “The Edge” was used on the new Jim Jones’ joint “Green Light Go,” featuring Swizz Beatz, while taking a trip down memory lane to see how it was used elsewhere. The sample should be pretty obvious, even to you newbies out there, so hit the jump for some edutainment. #FridayFlips

This week (Tuesday, to be specific) saw the release of Slaughterhouse’s long, long-awaited debut album, welcome to: OUR HOUSE, and to commemorate the occasion, the Shady Records crew give their Swizz Beatz-assisted “Throw It Away” cut its official music video.

Not to be the one to rain on the parade, but perhaps all these leaks from Life Is Good might not be the best thing to keep Nas’ forthcoming tenth studio album in its best stead. But seeing as though the ‘net has got its hands on over half of the LP’s content, one more listen won’t hurt, right? Without further ado, here goes track number nine, “Summer On Smash”, featuring Miguel and Swizz Beatz – an uptempo number that will look to achieve just that. Should Def Jam not intend on surprising us like they did with Frank Ocean‘s channel ORANGE, God’s Son’s Life Is Good is scheduled to arrive next Tuesday (July 17th).

Pusha T

You’re probably familiar with the latest track to surface from the G.O.O.D. Music camp, but we ain’t really ’bout that CDQ life? After presenting itself online a few days ago in Flex bombed-form, today you can enjoy Pusha T and Swizz Beatz‘s “In This Ho (Lambo)”, aka “Mercy Part 2″, exactly how it should be below. I’m still confused as to whether this is part of the proposed second G.O.O.D. Fridays series (the crew have hardly been punctual with the releases), but at least we now have a release date for the G.O.O.D. Music compilation album, Cruel Summer. The LP will bless our ears on August 7th.

Greg Grease – “Forward”

If you’ve managed to get this far during the week, you probably deserve a break. And what good timing to introduce Greg Grease‘s latest video for “Forward”, a stripped down, less-is-more banger that doesn’t need to be overdramatic to get it’s point across. Directed by Adam Dunn as a part of his #LABB (Lights and a Backdrop) series, the visuals are as minimalistic as it gets, allowing the Grease, his DJ and his turntable to play centre stage. Check it out and be sure to pick up Greg Grease’s Black King Cole EP if you don’t already own it.
